Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost engine uses a unique timing system where the belt runs submerged in engine oil — unlike traditional dry cam belts. This was designed to reduce friction and improve efficiency, but has a critical vulnerability.
As the engine ages, the belt degrades and sheds fine rubber particles into the oil. This debris blocks the oil pick-up strainer and starves the engine of oil — sometimes before any warning light appears.
